Tooth sensitivity can disrupt your sleep and make eating and drinking a challenge. You want to get to the bottom of it as soon as possible!

Several factors can cause sensitive teeth, and some of these are temporary.

Common culprits include:

  • Teeth whitening products leaking onto the gums
  • Nighttime bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching)
  • Enamel wear or erosion
  • Cavities or emerging tooth infections
  • Gum recession as seen in gum disease
  • Brushing and flossing too hard

Combating Tooth Sensitivity and When to Call the Dentist

If you’re in the middle of teeth whitening and haven't experienced tooth sensitivity before, take a break from bleaching and see if your symptoms improve.

If you brush and floss too aggressively, it can damage your enamel and lead to tooth sensitivity.

When the cause of your sensitivity isn’t immediately apparent, we encourage you to contact our dental office to book an appointment. If sensitivity increases to pain, we consider it a dental emergency in Mirrabooka. Please call us to schedule an emergency visit.

In the meantime, try switching to toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth. You can also try an over-the-counter gel to numb a particularly sensitive area temporarily.

Avoiding Tooth Sensitivity with Healthy Habits

  • Brush and floss in a circular motion using a soft-bristle toothbrush, being firm yet gentle.
  • See your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional teeth cleans.
  • Trust your teeth whitening to the dentist and avoid over-the-counter kits.
  • If you have a nightguard, always remember to wear it during sleep.

Our goal is to ensure you enjoy a healthy and comfortable smile that causes no pain or discomfort. If sensitivity worsens or does not improve, it is time to call your Mirrabooka dentist.
