At Western Smiles Dental Care, we offer services for patients of every age. We love caring for the smallest smiles in our community, and we welcome children around the age of three years old, when they can comfortably sit in the dental chair, unless parents have concerns early on.

Today, we're going to focus on children's dentistry in Mirabooka and answer some common questions parents have about their child's oral health.

How Often Should My Child Visit the Dentist?

Our dentists recommend starting your child's dental visits around age three. A three-year-old can comfortably sit in the dental chair and have their teeth examined.

At Western Smiles Dental Care, we take the time to get to know children and talk with them about what we're doing and the importance of oral health, so they feel comfortable, welcome, and safe at the dentist.

After their initial visit, children should visit the dentist every six months, just like their parents. Consistent visits help build positive rapport with children, monitor their dental health and development, and protect their developing teeth.

Why Are Baby Teeth Important?

Parents may wonder why it's essential to care for baby teeth, since they will be falling out eventually. Great question!

Baby teeth actually have several critical jobs to perform before they fall out:

  • Holding space for future adult teeth
  • Helping your baby form their first words
  • Introducing your little one to solid foods
  • Guiding adult teeth into the correct position

When children lose baby teeth too soon, it can impact their oral development.

How Can We Prevent Tooth Cavities?

Helping your child with their brushing and flossing techniques until at least age seven ensures they're making the most of their home care routine. Monitor your child's intake of sugary foods and beverages, and promote healthy snacks and drinking water. Ensure they visit their dentist every six months for preventive teeth cleaning and check-ups. These are all excellent ways to prevent tooth decay and cavities.
